You were very proud of your beautiful wooden fence but here we are, the years have passed and time has passed your barrier. Take advantage of a beautiful spring weekend for example to repair your fence in the open air.

First step, assess the damage

Has rot set in? Do you need to change some of the defective fence elements? Are the hinges still functional?

Walk around the fence and evaluate the damaged parts that need to be changed. If you have carried out routine maintenance, this may not be necessary, your fence probably just needs a big cleaning. Otherwise, start by replacing what is defective.

Scrape and sand

The paint is a little chipped, you will have to scratch it first! Strip your fence to the maximum to remove the old damaged paint with a spatula and if necessary, a paint stripper.

Rinse with clean water and let dry.

If your fence has cracks or mouldings in some places, remove the «sick» parts of the wood with a chisel and apply with a spatula a wood paste or a special resin. Be sure to smooth the surface so that it does not form a relief on the wood. Let it dry and then sand.

Notes: To avoid the chore of cleaning and collecting debris and pieces of chipped paint, install a plastic sheet under the fence. This way, the rubbish falls directly onto the tarp

The painting

Before starting the painting work, protect floors and other surfaces near the fence that could be splashed with plastic tarpaulins type special paint tarps of 80g/ m².

Also check the weather before painting: if the weather is rainy or there is too much wind, postpone the activity until later.

Preferably, apply two coats of paint minimum, a specific paint, intended for wood.

Notes: You can also treat the wood before you start painting. There are different products to help wood fight pests and mold.
